Mau leaders and paramount chief Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III in front of the ocatagonal Mau office in Vaimoso village, near Apia, Samoa, 1929. The distinctive small building includes the sign ‘Samoa mo Samoa’ (Samoa for Samoa), the motto of the Mau movement, a national non-violent movement for Samoa’s political independence in the early 1900s.
Today Samoa celebrates the 50th anniversary of achieving independence from New Zealand. I was going to do a quick writeup on the Samoan independence movement but it appears I deleted all my notes from when I studied it in 2010 :/
Happy Independence Day Samoa!
